We've made a lot of decisions building Mel's Flowers from the ground up. Some of them (logo colours, font choices, which courier to use on a rainy Tuesday) felt enormous at the time and seem small in hindsight.
The mason jar was never one of those decisions. That one was easy.
Every arrangement we send arrives in a reusable glass mason jar, ready to go. It's the one thing people ask us about most, and honestly, we love that they ask. Here's the full story.
No Vase? No Problem. No, Really.
There's a small comedy that plays out in households across Australia whenever flowers arrive the traditional way. Beautiful blooms, a rustling of cellophane, and then the hunt begins. The too-short vase. The too-wide vase. The "I know we own a vase" vase that is nowhere to be found.
We thought about that a lot when we were starting out, because we'd all lived it.
So we made a decision: your flowers would arrive already in their home. A proper glass mason jar, stems trimmed, arrangement sitting just right. You put it on the bench. Done. No rummaging, no improvised glass-of-water situation, no moment of mild domestic chaos between you and the flowers you were just genuinely excited about.
It sounds simple. It kind of is. That's why we like it.
It's a Longer-Lasting Gift Than You'd Think
Here's something we hear a lot: the jar sticks around long after the flowers have had their moment.
People use them for candles, for kitchen herbs, for holding paintbrushes or pens or the good scissors they don't want anyone else using. A few customers have sent us photos of their jars months later, still living useful little lives on a windowsill or a desk.
That means when you send Mel's flowers to someone, you're not just sending something beautiful for a week. You're sending something they'll keep. Something that quietly says you thought about it.
That feels right to us.
It's Better for the Planet, and We Won't Pretend Otherwise
We started Mel's from scratch, which means we got to build things the way we actually believed in, not inherit someone else's habits.
The floral industry uses a lot of single-use plastic. Sleeves, wrap, filler. Most of it goes in the bin within minutes of the delivery arriving. We wanted to do things differently, so we chose glass.
Reusable. Recyclable. Built to last longer than the occasion it arrived for.
We're a growing business, not a giant corporation. We know the impact of one small florist is a small one. But small decisions stack up, and this one was an easy yes from the very beginning.
Our Arrangements Deserve a Better Home
We put a lot of care into our arrangements. They're lush, abundant, genuinely considered. The kind of flowers that look like someone thought about them, because someone did.
Cellophane does those flowers no favours. It squishes petals, traps stems, and makes even a beautiful bunch look like it's waiting at an airport.
A mason jar holds an arrangement the way it's meant to be seen: upright, open, with room to breathe. The blooms sit properly. The whole thing looks, from the moment it arrives at the door, like a finished piece rather than a work in progress.
We're proud of what we put together. The jar lets that show.
Honestly? It Just Feels Like Us
When we were building Mel's, we kept asking ourselves what we'd actually want to receive. Not what the industry standard was. Not what was cheapest or fastest to pack.
What would feel genuinely thoughtful?
The jar kept coming up. It's generous. It's practical. It's a little bit charming without trying too hard. And it reflects something we care about: that the details matter, that a delivery should feel like it was considered from start to finish.
We started from scratch and built something we're proud of. The mason jar was part of that vision from day one, and it still is.
